Egypts pop-star Hisham Abbas breaks onto the Indian pop scene with his album Habibi Daah (Nari Nari), released recently by Virgin Records...
The last time we had heard an Arabian pop song was Khaleds Didi, which had become quite a rage in India when it was released here. After that we did come across a few Arabic songs, like Alabinas Ya Habibi Allah, but none made as much an impact as Didi. Now we have another singer-composer from Middle East making a splash in India. Hisham Abbas, the favourite pop singer of Egyptians, has released his album in India titled Habibi Daah (Nari Nari), and the initial response to the video and the song is quite good. It now remains to be seen now whether the song becomes as big a craze as Khaleds Didi.
When we met the Egyptian singer-composer at a suburban five-star hotel, while on his trip to Mumbai, he was a picture of contrasts. Big and burly, sporting those hip blue-tinged glasses, he looked more like a wrestler. But when he spoke, the veil from his imposing personality was lifted to reveal a school-kid-like excitement as he spoke passionately about his music. And lending him complete support was his blonde wife Jiji, who is also his manager.
The Egyptian pop-star is a big craze in the entire Middle East, and has released six solo albums, all of which were hits. His seventh album Habibi Daah (Nari Nari) too was a big hit in the Middle East, and it is this album that Hisham brings to the Indian music scene. Was there any particular reason for releasing this album in India? "We shot the video for the title song in India, in the backwaters of Kerala and at the exotic Taj Mahal, and thats when I fell in love with this country, and its people. So that was one reason for releasing it here," says Hisham in his typical Middle Eastern accent, "Also, when the album was released in the Gulf in Spetember, it was loved by the Indian community there. I felt it had the potential to work here."
The album was released in Egypt by Delta Sounds, which has a tie-up with EMI. And EMI releases its albums in India under the label of Virgin Records, which is how Habibi Daah (Nari Nari) has been released by Virgin here. "I did a lot of promotional concerts in the US when my album was released there," informs Hisham, "But I felt I had to release my album in India. Without India, it wouldnt have got a complete exposure to the world of music. I was also keen to bring this album here since I believe it can do a crossover from Egyptian to Indian music."
Habibi Daah (Nari Nari)... translated into English means Thats my love (My fire is doubled). The album has 10 tracks, all in Arabic, composed by Hisham himself. Quiz him whether he is apprehensive as to how his album will be received in India, since the tracks are in an alien language for the people here, and he retorts with questioning brows, "Did you understand what Khaled was singing in Didi?" When we respond in negative, he continues with that triumphant look, "That song was in Arabic, but it caught the fancy of India inspite of the people here not making out a word of the song, except maybe the catchy initial word Didi. Language is never a barrier in music. Isnt it always said that the language of music is universal? Its the rhythm that gets to you. If the tune is catchy, you just start humming it, without caring for the words. Indian songs are loved in Egypt, and we dont understand Hindi there." As if to prove his point, Hisham hums a tune of one of his favourite songs from Sangam.
Born in Cairo, Hisham graduated as a mechanical engineer, but ended up having a career in music. "Though nobody in my family is into music, I was always musically inclined. I was 16 when I started singing and had my own band called Bats," he recalls, "But I did my engineering to please my father, whos also an engineer. Later though, I convinced him that my heart is into music and he relented. I started out as a sound engineer, and then moved on to singing and composing."
