Problems of Social Constructivism and Postmodernism - 362 sec
Jeffrey L. Kasser speaks about the vision of science and the possible role philosophers of science should play in assisting science. I would have to go contrary to the fashionable trend of what many here on YouTube think and post this video. We continue to see in our culture, the cynical and deviant caricature of science drawn by social constructivists and postmodernists with untenable "grand narrative" only they seem to exhibit. Yet they continue to exploit and distort scientific theories (string theory, quantum mechanics, many-worlds interpretation etc) to serve their needs because they know that science does have authority in making genuine worthy statements about nature. But at the same time to social constructivists and postmodernists, science is no more then yet another "narrative" or a genre of literature speaking nothing about the mind-independent external world. Kasser thinks this tendency to promote relativism stems from valuing other branches of studies and their epistemology (notably English departments in universities...). Yes, of course, it is true that scientists are fallible and scientists cannot be totally passive about their narrative point. And yes, some scientist do crudely think that we can demarcate science and pseudoscience easily. But I have to appeal to the success of science. I believe that scientific theories progressively are getting better. The standard that we judge that a theory is becoming better is would be some pragmatic virtues. Better theories will solve more problems, and the problems found by us should in some way reflect the genuine questions we have about the real world. Then it seems reasonable to suppose that scientific theories are becoming progressively better in describing the way the world is over time. Thus scientific realism. "Jeffrey L. Kasser is a Teaching Assistant Professor of Philosophy at North Carolina State University. He received his B.A. from Rice University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor." (info from teach12.com)

The Lies Called "Post-Modernism"/Relativism and Tolerance - 845 sec
Have you ever had someone tell you, "Hey, you have your truth and I have mine. There is no such thing as absolute truth."? At that point you should then ask them, "Is what you've just said, 'there is no absolute truth' absolutely true?" They may say, "Well, I'm just saying that we can't be completely sure about anything." You should then ask, "Are you completely sure that we can't be completely sure about anything?" Then they may say, "Ok, ok... You're not right because we can't know that anything is right or wrong. That's all I'm saying. It's all relative." You should then say, "Is what you're saying, 'You're not right because we can't know if anything is right or wrong' ...right?" Behold, the essence of "post-modernism" or relativism as it's also so called. Here's basically what the philosophy stands for: Self-refutuation. It's a walking contradiction, and it's a lie. When someone says that we can't know if anything is absolutely true, tell them that they are lying and remind them what one is called who tells lies. Of course they will get mad, but anyone who doesn't love truth and says we can't really know what truth is, is opposed to the One who is the Truth, the Way, and the Life and those who believe in Him. http://www.crosstv.com

Postmodernism: is it a new idea? - 300 sec
Is postmodern a new idea or can it be found in the first three chapters of Genesis? Do words have any meaning or do you make up your own meaning with words? "Word and reality have to match or you amputate description from fact," Ravi answers. Watch the entire exchange as Ravi Zacharias answers the question of postmodernism versus Hellenism at Penn State University.

Ludwig Wittgenstein and Postmodernism - 304 sec
Although this lecture makes no connection between Wittgenstein and postmodernism, it is not difficult to find fundamental tenets of postmodern philosophy in Wittgenstein's latter philosophy. To Wittgenstein, philosophy of language at its core is foundationaless, formed on pragmatic grounds based on our perspective. It is not surprising that Wittgenstein's ideas are picked up and advanced to further extremes by Jean-François Lyotard. What is post-modernism? How has it affected our culture? How will it impact our future? What is the role of the Christian church in a post-modern world? What i think i know about postmodernism; it's nothing to do about art (sorry). Also, i think in literature the nouveau roman (it's French) movement is somewhat postmodern, but i could be, and most likely am, wrong. Yes, i konw. I can't say unobtainable.
