One of the untold stories of the High School Musical franchise is how talented the cast really is, says Barsocchini. Yes, theyve all become teen idols. But theyre good young actors. Our principal cast has molded those characters into something that kids love. Thats the secret. Ortega adds, The chemistry the kids have with each other elevates it and makes it something more than just telling a fun story. They are the most generous lot you could ever hope to work with. They really come to work with the right things on their minds. 11 SENIORS STORY Everyones favorite high school sweethearts Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez—played by Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens—still front the troupe. Im very excited for High School Musical 3 to be on the big screen, says Efron. This is what weve been waiting for, what weve been working towards, and it feels great because I feel like we earned it. Were just regular kids that made High School Musical and now its progressing. Efron has grown up with his character. Troy is a lot of different things, he says. Hes a very average kid going through high school, dealing with everyday choices. But the fun thing about him is that hes got these hidden talents. So Troys got a lot to balance: his basketball career, his newfound love of singing, and then of course, Gabriella. Whatll happen to them after high school? You dont know. Its like typical high school drama that we get to sing about. According to writer Peter Barsocchini, the Troy Bolton character was inspired by the great Pittsburgh Steelers football player Lynn Swan. Barsocchini went to high school with Swan; they played on the same basketball team. One day we were riding on a bus to a game and he said You know, Id really like to try ballet, says Barsocchini. Theres the character. Theres so much pressure on kids to be cool that its tough to do something different. Adds co-producer Don Schain, One of the big lessons from the first movie is to break stereotypes. The power forward wants to be a pastry chef. The star basketball player wants to be a thespian. The message to children is that you can be whatever you want to be. Troy Bolton has always planned to go to the local university with his best friend Chad, explains Borden. Now, because of his relationship with Gabriella and his relationship with the stage, he has some choices to make.... Nurturing an impressive body of work that encompasses film and television, ZAC EFRON (Troy Bolton) is positioning himself as one of Hollywoods most promising talents as his career continues to evolve. Last month, Hollywood.com visited the set of 17 Again to chat with stars Zac Efron and Michelle Trachtenberg. By Emily Christianson, Hollywood.com Staff Stopping by the set of Seventeen Again, we thought we might get to see a little action. The plan was to shoot a beach party in Santa Monica with stars Zac Efron and Michelle Trachtenberg front and center, but the strong ocean breeze blew those plans right out of the water. Luckily, Hollywood.com did catch the costars for a quick chat inside Trachtenbergs trailer, before the duo took off to film an alternate scene at an undisclosed location. Hollywood.com: We just heard the beach bonfire scene had to be postponed because of the weather. So what other fun scenes have you been working on? Michelle Trachtenberg: I felt really bad because the other night I had to slap Zac and that was really hard for me to do. There were like three takes and he was such a trooper. His face was burning red and I was like, Im sorry! He was like, Just do it. Come on! He was so funny. Zac Efron: The thing about slaps on camera is there are so many ways to do it wrong! HW: You two got to play father and daughter in this film? Thats got to be weird. MT: I call him dad. [I say things like], Good morning, dad. [Laughs] HW: Michelle, your character Maggie sounds like a total rebel. MT: Shes pretty cool. You cant see it right now but I usually have bright green extensions in or like black and blonde extensions in or burgundy ones. Shes a really fun girl Shes sort of your typical 17-year-old girl, kind of rebelling against her parents. Shes being inspired by her boyfriend, who is a rebel with a tattoo and just sort of angry at her parents, doesnt understand why theyre getting divorced and trying to go through her everyday life not caring. HW: Zac, Matthew Perry plays an older version of your character. Is it true you studied him? ZE: Yeah, a little bit. Hes got a few mannerisms, a lot of small things that I tried to incorporate I try not to do too much of it. Only at very few select moments will you see it. I think people are different as they grow older. What I wanted to play a lot with this character is watching his youth come out again, when he comes back to being 17. I didnt want to be the exact same person. HW: Have the fans been trying to mob the set at all? ZE: Sets arent the fun place you think they would be. Its kind of a bunch of ominous, big hairy grips running around with big trucks. It also doesnt look like a really fun place. Theres no giant Hey, lets have fun signs. HW: You guys are having fun right? Who is the biggest prankster on set? MT: Its me. Im probably the worst I make fun of everyone just for laughs. ZE: Thats gonna be a great quote. I can just see that in print: I make fun of everyone. MT: No. I honestly think that because I didnt have the same high school experience Ive sort of just been really odd about the fact that this entire cast really loves each other and we all give each other such fun stuff that we pick on each other. HW: What were your not-so-normal high school years like? MT: I think we wrapped Buffy when I was 17and about a week later I was on my way to film Eurotrip. I definitely was not a party girl, nothing crazy. I sat home and read books and watched Law and Order marathons [laughs]. I still do that. Its so lame! ZE: I was a very regular 17-year-old. I dont know any other way to put it. I wasnt fighting crime or anything. MT: You werent? I was. Vampires and stuff [laughs]. HW: Did you guys fit in? What kind of clothes did you wear? ZE: I used to not even care. Id literally wear pajamas to school. MT: I wore a uniform to school and I would rebel so hard against the uniform. Id wear like striped socks and platform shoes and tons and tons of necklaces. HW: Would you guys go back if you could? MT: I wouldnt. ZE: It seems, having just got out of there, I dont know if Im ready to go back. Theres already a few things that I know Id do differently but that is, in no way, gonna make me go back and relive it. HW: In a way you get to relive it one more time with the next High School Musical movie. ZE: Oh, yeah. I have to do that all over again, High School Musical 3 - that Im looking forward to. Its great. Were gonna start in a few months.

We're thinking were gonna let those pretty "girlfriends" sit this one out. Since it's 1 versus 3, we'll begin with Zac Efron. This guy has been singing and acting out his heart in theatre since he was barely 11. Co-starring roles in major TV-shows led to bigger spots in ever-popular movies which ultimately led to his current star status. Zac rocked out for the High School Musical series of course, as well as in the remake of the popular musical, Hairspray. He also acted in 'Me and Orsen Welles' and just finished up playing a main role in '17 Again'. With often tanned skin and ice-blue eyes, the media is certainly eating up this clean-cut, stylish 20-year-old. Zac was ranked number-2 on TV-Guide's Top-10 Teen Countdown in 0-8 and number-26 on Entertainment Weekly's 30-Under-30 actors list. Efron was also named by a top international celebrity broker as 1 of 5 young dealmakers to watch in the next year, even talking about a possible link between Efron and Pepsi, since both are synonymous with pop culture. Either way, good things are definitely in the making for Zac. While Efron has had great luck with acting and some good success on the music charts with Disney, the Jonas Brothers do-it-all as well but the pro focus actually switches. With their growing fan base, Kevin, Joe and Nick have been acting in Disney Channel projects like the Camp Rock series and their self-titled show, but the trio opts to zone-in on their musical talents. The newest album from the J-Bros, 'A Little Bit Longer,' immediately stole the show with the first 6 pre-album-release singles all making it in to the iTunes number-1 position. In fact, the popular group reportedly even rocked it as the first band to ever have 3-albums on the iTunes Top-10 at once. Plus, the industry and fans have been praising the guys for their boyishly good looks topped with unkept dark locks. Rolling Stone definitely took note and featured them as the youngest peeps on the mag cover ever. Plus, with their successful tours, Billboard topping tracks and the ability to perform AND write the lyrics, the Jonas Brothers and their classic with funky flair style continue to strengthen a connection with the music world.
