تاريخچه ۱۸ تير
روز جمعه ۱۸ تير ۱۳۷۸، در تاريخ ايران به عنوان يك روز سياه در كارنامه جنايتكاران رژيم جمهورى اسلامى ثبت شده است. دانشجويان كه با تجمع و راهپيمايى در برابر توقيف روزنامه سلام به اعتراض برخاسته بودند، نيمه شب در خوابگاه خود با نيروهاى ضربتى حكومت رو برو شدند كه در اطاقها را شكسته، وسائل و كتابهاى دانشجويان را بهم ريخته و پاره كرده، دانشجويان بى دفاع را با مشت و لگد و اسلحه گرم مضروب و مجروح كرده و شمارى را با ذكر "مولاى ما حسين اين هديه را از ما بپذير" از طبقات بالاى ساختمان به پائين پرتاب كردند كه در نتيجه تعدادى از جمله عزت ابراهيم نژاد جان باختند و گروه بزرگى روانه بيمارستانها شدند.
بدنبال شب خونين ۱۸ تيرماه، نيروهاى مبارز جوان به گردهمايى آزاديخواهانه خود ادامه دادند و مردم كوچه و خيابان به پشتيبانى از دانشجويان بى دفاع شتافتند. تا روز ۲۳ تيرماه هر روز تظاهرات اعتراض آميز گسترده مردم ادامه داشت. شعارها و خواستهاى آنان از رسيدگى فورى به حمله شبانه به خوابگاه و محكوم كردن مهاجمان، تا به چالش طلبيدن همه زورگويان حكومت، نفى ولايت فقيه و استقرار حاكميت ملى را شامل مى شد. همچنين وقايع مشابهى در تبريز، اصفهان، مشهد، شيراز، اهواز و كرمان رخ داد و كشته و زخميهاى فراوانى بجا نهاد.
پس از اينكه حركت اعتراض دانشجويى در كشور همه گير شد، چهار وزير از دولت خاتمى به عنوان اعتراض استعفاء دادند. تاج زاده معاون وزير كشور و مصطفى معين وزير فرهنگ و آموزش عالى طى نطقهايى براى دانشجويان از جنبش آنها حمايت كردند
