La Guerra de Sucesión española dividió España entre los partidarios de Felipe V y del archiduque Carlos, ambos candidatos al trono. En apoyo del primero se manifestó Francia, con su rey Luis XIV al frente; a favor del segundo, Holanda, Inglaterra, Austria y Portugal. En 1713 finalizó la guerra en el exterior, con la firma del Tratado de Utrecht, paz refrendada un año más tarde con los acuerdos de Rastatt. En el interior, la contienda finalizó en 1714, con la caída de Barcelona, ciudad que había resistido en apoyo del pretendiente austriaco y en contra del centralismo borbónico. Ambos tratados dieron lugar a un nuevo mapa europeo. Inglaterra conseguía Terranova, Gibraltar y Menorca, así como permiso español para enviar anualmente una nave comercial a las Indias y monopolizar el comercio de esclavos. El Imperio austriaco se quedó con el Milanesado, Flandes, Nápoles y Cerdeña. A Saboya le corresponde una pequeña expansión en su frontera y la isla de Sicilia, que entregará a Austria a cambio de Cerdeña. El rey francés, Luis XIV, consigue a cambio que las potencias europeas reconozcan a su nieto, Felipe V, como rey de España, aunque en ningún caso las coronas de Francia y España podrán unirse en el futuro.
